Mt. Graham Safe House, Inc. (99)
Happy Summer Everyone!!!!
It has been an exciting few months so far here at Mt Graham Safe House. Our kitchen is all done, thanks to the Arizona State Corrections complex, the inmates did a fantastic job on the new floor, painting and cupboard repair and replacing old ones. Also to Home Depot for the nice ceiling fans and lights, installing them, and all the extra things they did. Aaron Sales for the beautiful new sofa and some odds and ends.
We appreciate them all and of course so do the clients. Our yard sales have really been good, and we appreciate all your donations, and your help. Please continue to think of us.
Most of the fires seem to be getting under control now, and it’s been an awful devastating time for those who have lost their homes, and it’s been very sad for the people of Arizona. The forests mean a great deal to all of us. Let’s always remember to put cigarettes out in the ash tray and make sure the camp fires are completely out before we leave. I’m sure it will be quite awhile before any are allowed up there. Many thanks to all the fire fighters, for their long hours and hard work.
We sincerely hope you all have a wonderful summer, and we can’t thank you enough for your generosity and goodness of heart. Until next time! Quote to live by “Do not judge another, until you have walked a mile in their shoes.” Take Care !!!!!!

This quarter we would like to recognize Valley Furniture for their service to the Mt. Graham Safe House. For the past seven years Valley Furniture has been donating their time by coming and moving furniture around the shelter for us whenever we need them. It seems like we always have a refrigerator, a bed, a couch or a washer that needs to be moved from one room to another and they are always there to help us. Another way they help is when somebody wants to donate a piece of furniture but cannot bring it to us, they will go pick it up and bring it to us at no charge. We truly appreciate all the time and work that is donated to us. Please help us show our appreciation to them by supporting their business. They are located on 350 East Armory Road in Safford. Their phone number is (928) 348-9340.

Summer is here and boy is it hot! Our food stores are low and school is out so local food drives have ended. We are in need of a cupboard restocking, anyone need a project?
What is Abuse?
Often time’s people think of being in an abusive relationship as only being physical. In fact it can be sexual (forced to have sex, unfaithfulness, etc), emotional (isolating from friends or family, humiliation in public, etc.), verbal (name calling, yelling, etc.), mental (told your crazy or making things up, etc) , environmental (not having a safe place to live, not having access to heat, water, etc), and economic (no access to financial resources prevented from seeking employment or hand over all income etc.)as well. A lot of times people don’t realize they are in an abusive relationship and people around them don’t see the warning signs because they don’t know what they are. Here are some characteristics of abuse:
Low self –esteem
Believes the abuse is deserved
Believes myths about battering relationships
Place high value on marriage and home with sex role stereotypes
Accept responsibility for actions of batterer
Feel guilty, deny the anger and terror they feel
Present a passive or composed exterior and an inner strength to insure their survival
Have severe stress reactions with physical symptoms
Use sex as a way to establish intimacy
Believe no one will be able to help solve their situation except themselves
If you know or think you know someone in an abusive relationship you can encourage them to call Mt. Graham Safe House at 928-348-9104 to find out how to get out or you may call and get information to help the person.

The Southern Arizona Battered Immigrant Women Project (BIWP) helps to identify and develop resources and provide outreach and training to organizations that interact with immigrant women who may be victims of domestic violence or sexual violence. The project has established six task forces in Arizona’s seven southern counties: Graham, Greenlee, Cochise, Pinal, Pima, Santa Cruz and Yuma.
Undocumented immigrant women who are survivors of domestic violence face challenges beyond those experienced by other women in the US such as isolation in a foreign country, constant fear of deportation, and believing they are at the mercy of their spouse to gain legal status. In rural areas, limited programs and resources exacerbate these challenges.
The goal of the BIWP is to improve the access to culturally appropriate services for battered immigrant women, thereby ensuring their rights under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and its mission of safety and empowerment for immigrant women and children victims of sexual and domestic violence.
